Procuring a cover on a budget for a self-published book is daunting. One may create a home-made cover easily and for free using readily available tools, but unless the author is also a graphic artist, it is going to look home-made. Or you can commission a graphic artist to commission a unique and outstanding image, but be prepared to pay serious money for that. One recent cover I greatly admired had cost over $1200. Between the realm of the home-made and the professional artist commission, there lies the pre-made cover market. There are many sites that offer pre-made covers for a nominal fee. They often do not quite fit the theme of the book, and one may not customize them beyond minor cropping and the addition of text and has but limited rights to use the image. But nonetheless, the price is reasonable and the quality is high, far better than "home-made." I have explored the offerings and capabilities of many pre-made cover sites, and even though I sometimes struggle to find the "right" image, and have wrestled with making the typography fit my vision, I have found the selection and support offered by "SelfPubBookCovers.com" the best in my experience. I have purchased four covers from them over the years and always been extremely satisfied with the result.
